Extraordinary Japanese Shigaraki ceramic tanuki or mischievous badger okimono, mid-20th century. A fine example of the famous pottery crafted at Shigaraki, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan, near Kyoto. Hand-formed with wonderful minimalist crafting. A mythical creature known for mischief, the whimsical tanuki was adopted as a symbol of aristocratic excess during the Edo period. Often displayed in front of sake houses to hint at the entertainment offered therein. Very good condition. Dimensions:  10" x 8" x 8".
