Magnificent, old Japanese Shigaraki ceramic jar or tsubo, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. A fine example of the famous pottery crafted at Shigaraki, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan, near Kyoto. Shigaraki dates to the medieval period, and from the 17th century has producing stunning glazed pottery of this type for functional use. Beautiful watermelon glaze with lovely green bands from top to bottom in traditional Shigaraki fashion. A striking display item or for use with dramatic ikebana display. These are becoming rarer and rarer to find. Great collector’s item! Very good condition with minor wear at lip. Dimensions: 27” high, 18” diameter at widest.
