Excellent 19th-century Japanese samurai kerai or retainer doll, Edo period.  Wonderfully animated features and pose.  Brilliantly white face and hands rendered in endearing expression, perhaps depicting the joy and rest of victory.  Beautiful, high-quality silk brocade costume and detail and human hair.  Traditionally made for display on Boys' Day, celebrated annually in Japan on May 5.  Accessories include sword, hat, sandals and large banner. Very good condition. Dimensions: 9.5" high, 7" wide.
