Rare Japanese ivory carving of an old chinese sage or scholar in embroidered robes holding a tea leaf jar, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912.  Artist signed Shoun on underside.  Colored and gilded ivory on hardwood stand.  Excellent expression, finely rendered profile and overall impression.  Strong solid form.  Very good condition.  Height:  12”.
