Finely carved early 19th-century Japanese woodcarving of Kobo Daishi.  Edo period.  Carved in the itto bori technique, this piece is likely made from ichii wood.  Seated in meditative pose, with rosary representing the compassionate nature of the universe in his left hand, this figure measures approximately  3 ¾” tall and is in very good original condition.  A Buddhist figure in traditional Japanese robes and seated on a raised throne-like platform.  Likely from the Takayama region of Japan.  A fine meditative piece for the art enthusiast.
