Charming, early 18th-century, Edo period blue-and-white porcelain suiban or flower basin.  This rare piece depicts a flock of sparrows or chidori flying over ocean waves, a common Japanese motif.  Expertly painted in a naive manner in underglaze blue on pure white body. Additionally decorated with rope band in high relief around the midsection of the flower arranging or ikebana container.  A difficult-to-find porcelain bowl for the collector.   Unglazed spur marks on underside typical of 18th-century techniques.   Excellent condition.  Dimensions:  11 ½” x 7 ¾” x 4”.
