Wonderful Japanese folk art shi-shi gashira lion’s head for use in the Shi-shi Mai dance, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912.  Fantastically rendered carvind of wood and lacquer.  Traditionally held aloft by one dancer, while another follows behind as the animal’s body during folk festivals.  The lion or shi-shi is thought to drive away evil spirits, especially at New Year.  A delightful, expressive and impressive item with great color and patina!  Comes with storage box.  Dimensions:  11” high, 22” wide, 13.5”.  Very good condition.
