Stunning Japanese maki-e lacquer bento or jubako stacking lunch box set, Meiji period (1868-1912). Traditionally used to store food during holidays when there was no cooking. Four layers, extra lid, and tray at base with dramatic, highly detailed chrysanthemum and fan motif. Abundant gold lacquer on black ground with stunning iridescent mother-of-pearl inlaid accents. A fabulous lacquer collector’s item for display or practical use as storage container for keepsakes. Very good condition. Dimensions: 17" high, 11.5" square (at base).
