Japanese Paintings

Japanese painting in the form of mounted screens and scrolls offer a unique and breathtaking alternative to Western art display.

Japanese painting styles can be categorized in three main styles. The first was strongly influenced by the Chinese until the Edo period (1603-1868); the second, a notable Japanese approach; and the third a Western inclination. All reflect an incomparable aesthetic and instinct in both their rendering and inspiration. Subject matter includes calligraphic images and Zen themes, landscapes and views, beautiful women and Noh and Kabuki theater settings and scenes from the Imperial court as well as everyday life.

There have been many renowned schools through its history. These include Kano, Tosa, Nanga and Shijo. The unique presentation in screen and scroll forms adds to the great charm and splendor of Japanese painting.
