Stunning Japanese kogo incense box with fine kodaiji lacquer work on a pewter-color ground, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912.  Mother-of-pearl inlay in kiri (paulownia) leaf and chrysanthemum inlay, a design created during the Momoyama period by Toyotomi Hideyoshi .  Delicate pine makie on interior lid.  Charming item for tea ceremony use.  Comes with original inscribed tomobako wooden storage box.  Very good condition.  Diameter:  .5” x 3.5”.

Fine small gold lacquer covered kogo kobako decorated with silver and gold lacquered flower buds and leaves in hiramaki-e on a polished ground. Meiji Period. Its exterior imagery describes a charming scene surrounded by clouds done in kirikane (cut-gold pieces). Inside, the box is decorated in dense nashiji gold lacquer. The box is marked on the upper right-hand corner of the lid with The Tale of Genji Chapter number 26 (Tokonatsu). Width: 2", length: 2"
