Rare old Japanese wood and gilt Buddhist deity, Kannon or Guan Yin, in black-lacquer zushi traveling shrine, late Edo to Meiji, period c. 1800-1912. Known as the goddess of mercy and compassion. Lovely, highly patinated gilt finish with full, richly patterned mandorla. Serenely posed in standing position atop delicate lotus blossom throne. Highly detailed carving throughout. Brass fittings on figure as well as shrine. Age-old patina demonstrates this was obviously a well loved and utilized piece! Very good condition with minor loss due to age and use. Wonderful item for home shrine or display. Height: 14.5 (zushi); 12.5 (figure).
