Handcarved Japanese benevolent sandstone Jizo monk (Ksitigarbha), late Edo period, c. 1800-1868. The only Jizo figure portrayed as a Bodhisattva (Ksitigarbha) in monk form.  Traditionally, he carries in one hand a staff to force open the gates of hell, and in the other a wish-fulfilling jewel" to light up the darkness.  He is the guardian of children and travelers.  His carved robe drapes his shoulders and falls in folds into his lap.  He sits in a meditative position with legs crossed and eyes downcast.  The elongated ears symbolize wisdom.  Very good condition.  Dimensions:  15 high, 14 wide, 11.5 deep.
