Japanese Okimono

The word okimono refers to any miniature sculpture from the tiny netsuke to larger display figures originally crafted for use in the Japanese tokonoma alcove. The materials used for their exquisite carving or crafting include wood, ivory, metal and bone.

Traditionally, they represent mythological figures, animals, deities and human figures and well as Noh and Kabuki theater masks and characters. For art lovers, okimono have become highly collectible examples of the skilled craftsmanship and enchanting imagination that are the foundation of all Japanese artisanship.
