Dramatic Japanese two-piece kannon-dansu, ryobiraki-isho or double-door clothing chest tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Fashioned of warm, lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood and remarkable for its lavishly decorated swing-out doors, which house deep, roomy drawers offering generous storage options. Additional drawers below offering great storage space within. Traditionally used both for clothing and as a symbol of affluence due to it highly decorative, abundant and valuable metalwork. Striking Japanese Wakasa lacquer writing box or suzuri-bako, mid-20th century. From Fukui prefecture, Wakasa lacquer ware originated at the beginning of the Edo period. A remarkable technique involving multiple layers and undercoats and often decorated with a variety of elements including egg and sea shells, pine and cypress needles, seeds as well as gold or silver leaf. Repeated coating and polishing results in a wonderfully varied and textured effect overall. Comes with original kiri wood storage box and ink stone. An exceptional piece in very good condition.
