Wonderful Japanese Zen Buddhist scroll, early 20th century. Features dramatic and animated sumi-e ink on paper serpent or dragon.  It is almost as if the snake painted itself!  Amazingly realistic skin.  Since ancient times, the Yamabushi Zen priests in the mountain regions of Japan have practiced Single-Stroke Serpent Painting, a spontaneous expression unifying ink, brush, and canvas.  Serpent paintings are thought to bring good luck and security. Signed and stamped by artist and temple.  An exceptional item!  Very good condition.  Dimensions:  72” x 22”.
