Large Japanese Shigaraki ceramic tea jar or tsubo, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. A fine example of the famous pottery crafted at Shigaraki, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan, near Kyoto. Shigaraki dates to the medieval period, and from the 17th century has produced stunning glazed pottery of this type for functional use. Classic cream glaze with beautiful watermelon glaze featuring lovely green bands from top to bottom in traditional Shigaraki fashion. The clay comes from Lake Biwa. Originally used to store tea leaves or water. Very good condition. Dimensions:  19 high, 12 diameter.
