Fantastic Japanese scroll painting, entitled “Hossu,” monk’s whisk, early-mid-20th century. Often shown in the hands of Daruma, also known as Dharma or Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. Sometimes described as a fly swatter, the whisk is thought to protect from desire and rid the area of insects without killing them. Unique subject, beautiful rendering in fluid, effortless strokes. Calligraphy and image merge to create striking, thought-provoking image. Hand-painted on paper. Very good condition.  Dimensions:  80.5” high, 18.5” wide.
