Large and rare Japanese wood ema for Shinto shrine, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Brilliant, still vivid rendering of merchant sailing ships on a blue sea, under a sliver of setting sun. Ema were traditionally given to Japanese temples for good favor. The three ships display banners with the name of the ships, which are derived from the names of the Shinto deities: Hachiman no Ookami, Kasuga Daimyojin, and Konpira Daigongen. The ema board was dedicated on September of the first year of Keio (1865) by Hiranumaya and made by Ensai Fujiwara Masatoshi. Very good condition. Dimensions: 25.75" high, 60” wide.

Rare and remarkable Japanese wood ema, late Edo period, dated 1804. Brilliant rendering of sumo wrestlers in eye-catching animated pose. Ema were traditionally given to Japanese temples for good favor. Although in ancient days, horses were frequently donated to temples for blessings, depictions of various themes on wooden plaques later served as substitutes. We almost never find Ema anymore, not to mention one with sumo motif and of this venerable age. A remarkable find! Very good condition. Dimensions: 20” high, 36” wide.
