Outstanding Japanese two-section Shiga style mizuya-dansu or kitchen chest tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Traditionally used to store kitchen utensils and supplies. Warm, golden cedar, sturdy cypress with richly grained keyaki wiid accents. Dramatic, eye-catching construction offers abundant storage space in large and smaller cupboards housed by several sets of sliding, iron-studded paneled doors. Multiple and varied drawers offer additional storage options. Lovely warabite-style metalwork, named for the warabi, a Japanese mountain fern, as they follow the same curving arc found in nature. A fantastic example of superb Japanese tansu craftsmanship. Very good condition. Dimensions: 65.5” high, 72.5” wide, 18” deep.
