Remarkable and rare all keyaki (zelkova) wood Japanese tanuki or mischievous badger okimono, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. A mythical creature known for mischief, the whimsical tanuki was adopted as a symbol of aristocratic excess during the Edo period. Often displayed in front of sake houses to hint at the entertainment offered therein. Wonderful, rustic, handcarved keyaki (zelkova) wood figure showing exceptional, imaginative crafting.  Very good condition. Dimensions:  16” x 15” x 12”.
