Substantial, rare Japanese jizai kagi or hearth hook, late Edo period, c. 1800-1868.  The jizai, part of every traditional Japanese home, is an architectural element of solid hardwood which was suspended from a ceiling beam over an open fire to support a hanging kettle. Made of solid keyaki wood, this Jizai is a fine example of the simplicity and quality of Mingei, the tradition of crafting every day objects. Very good condition. Dimensions:  21” x 17”.
