Dramatic full-size Japanese six-panel folding screen painting or byobu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Dramatic size and impression.  Ink and mineral color on paper.  Finely detailed rendering of court scenes. Known as yamato-e, a term first used in the Heian period for works representing subjects taken from literature and associated with famous places or the seasons.  As shown here, yamato-e features planes of rich color and pictorial devices such as fukinuki yatai (room without roof).  Beautiful, still vivid colors on abundant gold leaf.  Very good condition with minor damage and some wear to silk border.  Dimensions: 68” high, 146” fully extended.
