Wonderful Japanese carved architectural temple element, cypress wood, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912.  Guardian lion dog or shishi, rendered with great animation and skill, mounted on wood panel.  Green pigment with red and gold details. Traditionally featured on roof rafters or eaves of Buddhist temples throughout Japan. Originally carved in two pieces, slightly separated bottom and top.  Otherwise, very good condition. Dimensions:  12 high, 16 wide, 8 deep.
