Wonderful Japanese boy Ichimatsu doll, Taisho period, c. 1912-1926. Signed by famed artist Ko-Ryu-Sai. Beautifully handpainted silk kimono with enchanting gosho doll motif. Handcrafted in Kyoto, indicating the highest quality and artisanship. Exceptionally rendered face, with warm and gentle features finely crafted in traditional gofun. Very good condition. Dimensions: 17” high, 6” wide (at base).

Dramatic Japanese Gosho doll shown performing the Sanbaso, Taisho period (1912-1926). Traditionally shown before Kabuki theater, the Sanbaso is an auspicious dance now also presented at many New Year celebrations. Its common theme is a wish for peace and good harvest. Finely handpainted, delightful expression and detail. Wonderful characterization with great natural movement and beautifully expressive face. Stunning costume and traditional oversized head, chubby body and brilliant white skin, created by the application of many layers of polished gofun. Very good condition.
