Extraordinary Japanese Gosho doll, Kabuki Sanbaso dancer, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Traditionally shown before Kabuki theater, the Sanbaso is an auspicious dance now also presented at many New Year celebrations. Its common theme is a wish for peace and good harvest. Finely detailed handpainting, delightful expression and composition. Traditional oversized head, chubby body and brilliant white skin, created by the application of many layers of polished gofun.
