Our Price: $1,495.00

Sumptuous Japanese scroll depicting the legendary Buddhist deity, Avalokitesvara or Kannon, also called Kanzeon Bodhisattva, 20th century. The traditional name suggests that this Bodhisattva can hear the voices and concerns of the world, and, in order to provide immediate relief, can change into many different forms to save people freely at will according to their time and place. This is why in traditional Japanese culture Avalokitesvara is called Kanjizai Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva That Sees and Acts Freely at Will, and is spoken of in the Avalokitesvara Sutra as having thirty-three different forms. This vibrantly colored portrayal is attributed to Shimoyama Kanzan. Ink and color on silk, silk mounting. Black lacquer roller at bottom and signature at side. Dimensions: 55" high and 14.5” wide.
