|

Magnificent Japanese Edo period carving of wooden temple guardian or Nio figure (1615-1750). Fabulous rendering shows traces of gold suggesting the piece may once have been gilded. Half-nude figure with rippling muscles a dynamic display of power and exaggerated realism characteristic of late 14th-century Japanese sculpture. Delicately detailed fingernails, nostrils, eyes and teeth. Called Misshaku Kongo, this figure represents overt strength with bared teeth and raised fist. The open mouth is said to represent the cosmic sound “ah” meaning birth. These figures are traditionally placed at the entrance of a temple or shrine for security and protection. Remarkable condition given its age! Height: 18”.
