Asian Porcelain Art


Japanese porcelain has for centuries brought eager students and collectors from abroad to study techniques and add to collections. Although there are but a few types of Japanese porcelain, these are famed for their brilliant and finely rendered enamels, dramatic designs.

Japanese Arita and Imari porcelain, either of blue-and-white or bold multi-colored palette has been in great demand throughout the West since the 17th century. The highly detailed Kutani porcelain and renowned Kakiemon and Satsuma are equally admired.

A beautifully formed, baluster-style Chinese transmutation-glazed Langyao oxblood vase with crackle inside the lip and on the bottom, Ching dynasty in the period of Qianlong (c. 1736-1795). The rich red oxblood, or langyo color, is infused with blues ranging from cobalt to a light powder blue (souffle).  Transmutation (yao pien) allowed the artist to produce at will the variegated glazes. High shoulders and neck lead up to fluted lip. Very good condition.  Height:  15.5”.

Stunning Chinese polychrome ceramic vase, late Ching dynasty, c. 1895-1900, with Chi'en-lung mark, c. 1736-1795.  Beautiful goldenrod color, molded and handcarved with scene of standing cranes (he) and willow tree on one side, Mandarin ducks (yuanyang) and lotus on the other to mean, “May you be paired for life.”  The neck has a bat motif for good luck and happiness.  Imaginatively conceived and lavishly rendered.
