Outstanding Japanese Zen Buddhist scroll, early-mid 20th century. Features a dramatic and animated Ryu dragon. According to legend, the Ryu is the incarnation of a mythical carp capable of swimming upstream along the Ryumon, a tributary of the Yangtze River in China. The Ryu represents the ability to seek and find inner strength, perseverance and success. Since ancient times, the Yamabushi Zen priests in the mountain regions of Japan have practiced Single-Stroke Serpent/Dragon Painting, a spontaneous expression unifying ink, brush, and canvas. Dragon paintings are thought to bring good luck and security. Signed and stamped by artist and temple. An exceptional item! Very good condition. Original mounting in fine shape. Magnificent Japanese Edo period carving of wooden temple guardian or Nio figure (1615-1750). Fabulous rendering shows traces of gold suggesting the piece may once have been gilded. Half-nude figure with rippling muscles a dynamic display of power and exaggerated realism characteristic of late 14th-century Japanese sculpture. Delicately detailed fingernails, nostrils, eyes and teeth. Called Misshaku Kongo, this figure represents overt strength with bared teeth and raised fist. The open mouth is said to represent the cosmic sound “ah” meaning birth. These figures are traditionally placed at the entrance of a temple or shrine for security and protection. Remarkable condition given its age! Height: 18”.
